Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
